'Reflections of Hope' is a labyrinth formed by two spirals that you can walk through. The two spirals are defined by a series of slowly spinning, mirror-mosaic-covered spinning tops. As the tops rotate and light hits the mirror mosaics, a sea of moving reflections is created.
The spiral shapes represent the four steps of Joanna Macy's "Active Hope", which are also depicted as a spiral. The connection between mirrors and Active Hope lies in the process of self-reflection: looking honestly at reality and, from that, drawing the motivation to take action.
The mirror shards for the mosaic simply need to be carefully glued into place. The gluing is done section by section, covering either the top or the bottom of the spinning top, and each section takes approximately one to two hours. It does not need to be completed in one go, and the gluing can also be done together. During or before the mosaic work, the concept of Active Hope and its connection to the artwork will be discussed. This co-creation fosters a sense of connection and is an immediate contribution to Active Hope. The co-creation is part of the creation process itself and is separate from the exhibition of the artwork.
